LargeUp Premiere: Los Rakas Rep JA + Oscar Grant with “Hablemos Del Amor”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

You might be asking yourself right now: Los Rakas rep JA? Ain’t they those Panamanian dudes from the Bay? Yes, but they’ve just hopped on the brand-new riddim called Rep JA, from the streetwear label (and LargeUp family) of the same name. Gyptian, Laza Morgan, RDX, Kardinal Offishall, Dre’ and the Kid Daytona have all voiced the riddim but the inclusion of Los Rakas struck us particularly notable. Not only are we longtime supporters of Los Rakas and their efforts to bridge reggae, Panamanian plena and hip-hop but we knew they’d come with something extra strong.

Fashion Fridays: RepJA Summer Tees and Ting

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Ah Yah So Nice! That’s definitely the theme of the season in dancehall- and yard-inspired streetwear. Our doopses at RepJA have put their spin on Potential Kidd‘s spring-and summer-defining hit, with a Miami Vice-inspired design, while that TV show’s classic pastels also make their way into their just released summer line in a “Jamaica Nice” tee. Shabba Ranks’ classic “Love Punanny Bad”—or perhaps just loving punanny bad—is the inspiration for another. And for di stush gals dem, there’s the croptop you see above. Although the loose casualness of a croptop is kind of inherently not stush, no? Hmmm. Check the looks below, then head over to RepJA’s store.

New Music: Stream “Rum Punch” from Atlanta’s Dré

Words by Jesse Serwer —

Dré, short for Dré Money or Dréggae, is a Jamaican artist by way of Atlanta who some of you may recognize from the yardie anthem/Rep JA clothing brand promo clip “We Rep JA” featuring Kardinal Offishall. Dré, who’s also recorded a Jamaican answer to Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” (naturally called “Black Green and Yellow,”) has just dropped a solo tune called “Rum Punch,” and we think it could be the start of something big for the kid. Where the aforementioned tracks veered more towards the hip-hop side of things, “Rum Punch” is pure yard business from the title and theme to the sample of Admiral Bailey and Chaka Demus’ “One Scotch” that starts it off, while Dré’s delivery is straight out of the Mr. Lexx and Bounty Killer school of baritone vocals. Stream below and look out for more tunes from him here.

Mixtape Mondays: Federation Sound x 10 Deep, “Summer Murda” + Rep JA x Chinese Assassin, “Frenemies”

Words by DJ Theory

As we cruise into September, we’ve got one last summer post to close out the season proper. It’s Carnival season here in the US (make sure to check back here on LU soon for a wrap-up on today’s BK Carnival festivities), so anything else would be uncivilized. This Mixtape Mondays is so huge we don’t even know if our bandwidth will allow this much weight…

Mixtape Mondays: Chinese Assassin, Konshens, Kalibandulu

Words by DJ Theory

Is it Spring yet??? After a few false starts, it seems like the weather is finally starting to come around here in the Northeast. Here’s hoping these mixes can help tun up the heat wherever you may be.
