LargeUp x Okayplayer TV: Christopher Ellis x Mr. Vegas x The Roots

Words by Michellee Nelson~OkayPlayer Holiday-Christopher-Ellis

We’re back with another memorable performance from the OkayPlayer Holiday Jam with The Roots. This time, Christopher Ellis, son of reggae crooner Alton Ellis (and an established singer in his own right), took the stage with Mr. Vegas and The Roots to perform the rocksteady favorite, “I’m Still in Love with You.” Depending on your age, you might be more familiar with the version that Sean Paul and Sasha re-popularized back in ’04 on SP’s album Dutty Rock, but the senior Ellis penned the original track back in 1967.

Watch Christopher Ellis and the West Indian massive of the The Roots groove to “I’m Still in Love with You” as Mr. Vegas joins in to mash it up with “Hot Gyal Today.” While your at it, check out the rest of the bashment segment of the Holiday Jam with Bunji Garlin, Addis Pablo of “Suns of Dub, and more from Mr. Vegas below.

Mr. Vegas is one of our all-time favorite performers. We’ve brought the singjay to an industry party in Miami, had him perform unplugged at a movie premiere at NY’s prestigious Lincoln Center, seen him rock stages everywhere from London to Dominica, and every single time he shuts. it. down. We’ve wanted to bring him onstage with The Roots at the Okayplayer Holiday Jam for a few years now and, last Monday, the stars finally aligned to make this happen.

LargeUp TV: Bunji Garlin “Differentology” Live With The Roots

Words by Michellee Nelson~Bunji Garlin live with The Roots LargeUp

Brooklyn Bowl mash up! The Viking of Soca, Bunji Garlin, joined The Roots (!) and the LargeUp crew for a performance of his hit song “Differentology” at Monday night’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam. For many in the audience, it was their first taste of soca music, and we’re certain it won’t be their last, especially with “Differentology” blazing up the airwaves across the East Coast.

With help from his wife, Trini soca star Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez on backing vocals (and Mr. Vegas, handling MC duties after performing “Heads High,” plus dancer extraordinaire Miss Likklebit) Bunji turnt Brooklyn Bowl all the way up, freestyling over the Roots interpretation of the “Differentology” riddim, and showing us just why he has one of the most popular soca tunes of the year.

Coming into December’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam, we had quite the task before us. Last year we brought out Shaggy and Patra, among others, for an all-star session with The Roots that turned out to be the hip-hop legends’ first-ever dancehall jam. How could we possibly outdo that?

In our second video from the historic The-Roots-Meet-Dancehall-Allstars session at this year’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam, Mr. Easy starts things off with a quick snippet of his classic “Drive Me Crazy” before a shapely Patra, looking incredible in a camo Butch Diva spandex suit with high-heel boots (is it us or is she looking sexier than ever these days?), wines her way onstage, taking the spotlight with her classic “Romantic Call,” while Shaggy and Rahzel provide support. Watch Part 1 here, and look out for the third and final clip—with Rayvon and Red Fox joining Shaggy, Patra and Easy—soon.
