Dominican Princess: Maluca x PartySquad “Lola (Ging Danga)” Video

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

On Friday, Dominican princess Maluca Mala dropped this video for “Lola (Ging Danga)”–our favorite track from her yet. The visual is a mosh-up of Girl 6, sex hotline ads, local cable porn and NY fringe culture generally, a fantasyland of Washington Heights mixed with pre-Times Square but the music is pure Caribbean heat, part Nuyorican hiphouse, part MIA and all fierce. Watch below and preview her new track, “Que Que,” at Mad Decent:

LargeUp Exclusive: Win Tickets to See Los Rakas + Maluca in NYC 7/21

Words by Jesse Serwer and Eddie STATS Houghton

Armin Van Buuren, be damned. Heineken might be Dutch but left-of-center Latin music is what it’s meant to be drank to, and to prove it they’ve organized “The Spot,” a series of performances and parties (curated by Latin nightlife guide Remezcla) featuring Tego Calderon, Los Rakas, Maluca and more at a top-secret location in New York City. We can’t tell you where Los Rakas, Maluca and Brazilian baile funk star Zuzuka Poderosa will be this Thursday night (July 21st) at 8 PM but we do have two free pairs of tickets to the event to give away. For your chance, follow us on twitter and tweet the following phrase: I want to win tix to see Los Rakas & Maluca at #TheSpot by #Heineken this thursday thanks to @largeupdotcom. Remember you MUST follow @largeupdotcom so we can DM you confirmation and details on how to collect your tix if you win (and if you can’t spell ‘Maluca’ correctly, we’re sorry but you don’t qualify).  In the meantime, get familiar by watching our Now Things webisodes with Maluca and Los Rakas, and check a video preview of the series (which actually kicked off last week—sorry, Tego fans) below.

Pow Pow Boogie: Maluca “Lola (Ging Danga)”

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via Mad Decent

The big players in Caribbean music are gearing up for their summer releases, when tropical music tends to rule the airwaves in the northern hemisphere as well. In spite of reports that the music game was putting her in the almshouse, it seems our favorite Dominicana Maluca Mala is no exception. An LP entitled Massive Pow Pow is coming with the warm weather and this tropical club jam “Lola (Ging Danga”) produced by Rollz Royce/Traphouse–more Nuyorican house than merenegue–is the first result. Might be my favorite Maluca track yet; the infectious spanglish/glossolalia hook and Maluca’s Frida Kahlo/Cleopatra/Vogue-ball style suggest she might just be picking up the torch where MIA left it when she retreated into an LA synthpop bubble and leading the charge on this whole ghetto palms thing. Go, Lola.

From DR With Love: Free Music!

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via Mad Decent

DJ Paul Devro just posted an extra-size portion of his favorite new selections from the Dominican Republic over at the Mad Decent blog; a generous trans-shipment of free music and a nice cross-section of Latin house, carnival sounds, dembow (aka reggaeton) and of course mambo de calle. Not sure how closely this represents the scene on the ground but Devro should know a thing or two about Dominican sounds, having developed his ear as DJ and part-time svengali for Mad Decent’s own Maluca Mala, who put nuff merengue into her Washington Heights Chinese-Caribbean mofongo. Download the whole dang package here or check the track-listing and listen here if you want to grab ‘em individually. Give thanks!

LargeUp TV: Now Things with Maluca

A LargeUp Exclusive Webisode – Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, photos by Martei Korley. Video by Martei Korley, edited by Noah Workman.

We decided to launch our new Now Things series–focusing on cutting edge artists across all genre boundaries who happen to have roots in the Caribbean–with an exclusive profile on Ms. Maluca Mala of Mad Decent fame. Injecting a powerful dose of Dominican culture into what she describes as “banjee rave” music, Maluca has been generating tons of heat this year with her merengue-inflected club anthem “El Tigeraso” and her mixtape China Food, which dropped last month. Ms. Mala linked us uptown before the weather turned cold to show us around the park-scapes where she used to rave in the shadow of the Geo. Washington bridge, speak on the Caribbean element of her sound and all the other influences that shaped the tracks on China Food, from ESG to Dutch house. One of the Dutch cats she put us up on, in fact, was Oliver Twizt and their collaboration “Loca” just went up on the Mad Decent blog. Stream it here and get the full, immersive Maluca video experience after the jump.
