For Di Man Dem: Watch Nyla’s New Video “Stand Up”

Words by Emily Shapiro, Photo by Gary James—

In April, we had the pleasure of chatting with Nyla Thorbourne, one half of the Miami-based dancehall/pop sister duo, Brick & Lace. After changing the spelling of her name (from Nailah), she launched her solo career, separate from her sister Nyanda, and gave us an exclusive listen to her first single “Stand Up,” released on Ky-mani Marley’s label, Konfrontation Muzik. The catchy tune (produced by Corey Chase and Mucka Hill), which has an R&B vibe and some fairly obvious sexual innuendos in the lyrics, has now been followed up with an equally sexy video.

Without much fanfare, Equiknoxx Music are making some of the most creative and interesting dancehall music right now. Actually, they’ve been doing that for a while. Their Wash Belly is one of our favorite riddims in recent years.

The production team led by Koffy Knoxx has just released a new EP called V-Town Sound: The Anti-Thesis. (it’s a sequel to an earlier V-Town Sound installment dubbed The Thesis), and every track is straight badness.

Marleys, the Next Generation

Saturday’s 9 Mile Festival in Miami was a coming of age thing for the grandchildren of Bob Marley. Daniel Bambaata Marley, eldest son of Ziggy, helped warm up the crowd with a well-received early performance at the surprisingly cold and wintery event. Jo Mersa Marley, Stephen’s eldest son, joined his father and uncles Damian and Julian onstage to perform his own material during their headlining set later in the evening. The younger Marleys have performed at the annual Marley family-affiliated festival before but this year saw them take a more prominent place at the proceedings, fresh off their appearances on the new Ghetto Youths International album Set Up Shop. Volume 1.

Fashion Fridays: Bob Marley Shop

Words by LargeUp Crew—

Marley merchandise is a big, hundred-millions-dollar-a-year business and, for years, the music legend’s family/estate was seeing very little of that, while bootlegging ran rampant. Recently, however, the family has begun taking this aspect of the late legend’s legacy back into their hands.
