Four years since it originally appeared as “Duppy Nuh Frighten Vampire” on Spragga Benz‘s Shotta Culture LP, the throwback sound of producer Jah Snowcone‘s Nuh Fraid riddim has found forwards and a new life recently, with a new round of tunes.

Vintage Vibes: Mr.Vegas + Joe Lickshot’s “Real Don”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

It seems like everyone in reggae and dancehall is going back to basics. You could say Mr. Vegas helped kick off this trend back in early 2012 when he released Sweet Jamaica, an album inspired by vintage rocksteady and Jamaican festival tunes. Vegas of course went right back to the future, embracing uptempo EDM-influenced dancehall on subsequent hits “Party Tun Up” and “Give It To Har,” but he’s set his watch back once again with “Real Don.”

Bounty Killer, Wayne Marshall and Federation Sound

Bounty Killer’s new one “No Long Talking” is one of our favorite tunes of the past month, and our pick for best Bounty song in at least a few years—it’s the Warlord back in top form. We can’t say for sure if it was recorded before or after his recent dust-up with Tommy Lee Sparta, but if that’s what it took to get him back on the level, than bring on the clash!

He Knows Snowcone…The Real Snowcone

Words By Jesse Serwer

magazeencover

Fans of Rick Ross’s Deeper Than Rap may recall Magazeen, the deejay who plays Officer Ricky‘s foil on “Yacht Club,” one of that album’s standout tracks. The Bawse signed the Miami-based yardie to his Maybach Music Group and is said to be making some efforts to break him properly in Jamaica. While one might question an American rapper’s ability to buss a deejay, Ross frequently performs at Caribbean clubs and events and is planning his own tour of the islands in November (We also hear he’s playing C-Pac in Flatbush, Brooklyn next month). The newly released “7-11 Hustle” features both the star and his protege on Jah Snowcone‘s (now year-old) 7-11 riddim, with a corresponding video shot in Kingston. Ross hopping on a juggling rhythm is notable in itself but will this catch on in yard?
