Giant Steps: Victor Cruz Takes “Silk City Salsa” Talents To Times Square

Words by Jesse Serwer, via NY Daily News:::Photo by Craig Warga—

If you watch (American) football or just live in the New York area, you’ve probably seen the salsa dance that New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz does every time he celebrates scoring a touchdown. Yesterday, the Puerto Rican Cruz, who says his steps are his way of paying homage to his grandmother, who taught him the steps, paid a visit to Modell’s Sporting Goods in Times Square, where a T-shirt in his honor (which reads “Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz” on the front, after the chant popular at Giants games, while depicting his “Silk City Salsa” moves on the back) is currently the store’s most popular item. The highlight, of course, was a demonstration of his endzone celebration with a group of kids and admiring females. Watch the New York Daily News’ video of the event below and, just in case you’re on the fence about who to support in next month’s Super Bowl game against the Patriots, read this New York Times profile from November on Cruz and Puerto Rican players in the NFL.

Track and Feel: Usain’s New Game(s)

Words by Jesse Serwer

Track careers are short lived. Runners peak in their early 20s. By age 30, things are pretty much a wrap. Though still at the top of his game, the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt already sees the writing on the wall, and is making other plans. Bolt, who turns 25 next August, said last week that he intends to re-invent himself as a footballer after his sprinting days are done. “I have four more good years in me if I train hard,” he told BBC Radio 5′s Sportsweek program. “I’m definitely a good player – a defensive or attacking midfielder. Somewhere around there.” Meanwhile, Media Takeout is reporting that Bolt has proposed to Jamaican beauty queen Lesa-Gayle Wee Tom, a.k.a. Milan from BET’s College Hill?!?

Toppa Top 10: Caribbean Footballers

Words by Jesse Serwer

Four years ago, the hype in this part of the world—Brooklyn—was all about Trinidad’s Soca Warriors, then making their first ever World Cup run. T&T didn’t qualify this year, nor did any other Caribbean nation, but that doesn’t mean the region isn’t represented in this year’s tournament. Antilleans make up a key cross section of the French team’s lineup—much as they did when France reached the 2006 finals—while England’s lineup features players with roots in Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica. Here’s a look at some of the top Caribbean and Caribbean-descended players in this year’s Cup, plus a few more who’ve proven themselves on the world stage recently.
