LargeUp Premiere: Ricky Blaze’s New Single “Lightaz”

ricky-blaze-lightaz-1

Brooklyn’s own Fresh Prince, Ricky Blaze has been a player in New York’s dancehall scene from a young age. He was making a name for himself at clubs in his teenage years and his hard work and early start has paid off. At just 24, he has already produced hits like Gyptian’s ever-popular “Hold Yuh,” Vybz Kartel’s “Touch Ah Button” and his own “Just You and I.” Always looking beyond reggae/dancehall with his sound, he’s also worked with big names from outside the genre like Santigold and Jazmine Sullivan, and recently released The Maestro Mixtape featuring hip-hop legend Talib Kweli, Jim Jones and more.

Now, he’s switching up again, teaming with Ultra Records, the iconic dance-music label behind the Ultra Music Festival and the recent EDM explosion, for the catchy, new single “Lightaz.” Electro Reggae is on the up and up and this ready-for-summertime, dance-pop collab is a good look for all parties involved. We love to see talented people broadening their horizons and bringing something new to Caribbean music, so we’re happy to be premiering the song right here. Listen below and look out for an exclusive feature with Mr. Blaze coming up on LargeUp soon.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Ricky Blaze x Talib Kweli, “Down Ass Girl”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Talib Kweli and Ricky Blaze are about as Brooklyn as it gets. But, despite hailing from same neighborhood—Flatbush— the two occupy such different corners of the music spectrum (mature backpack rap; youth-oriented dancehall pop), one might not expect the two to find their way onto the same track. Ricky’s “Down Ass Girl” hardly feels like a stretch, though: the beat has those ’90s style “boom-bap” no rapper of Kweli’s ilk can resist, but is poppy and soulful enough to suit Blaze’s smooth lover tones. The result has a bit of a Ryan Leslie x Fabolous type vibe to it. Stream and download below…

Ital Tune: Tarrus Riley’s Veggie Castle Dubplate

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo by Brian Derballa—

If you’re a New Yorker who moves through places like Flatbush and Richmond Hill or a vegetarian who doesn’t mind trekking for their Ital fix, you’re probably familiar with Veggie Castle. Originally housed in a former White Castle on BK’s Church Avenue, the owners relocated the famed Ital spot a few years back to a less castle-ian location on Liberty Avenue in Queens.

How We Roll: Watch Old Money’s “Dolla Van” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer

Mos Def and Talib Kweli made a video in one, but, really and truly, the dollar van doesn’t get repped nearly enough in song lyrics, considering its status as the definitive and preferred mode of transportation in the cultural mecca that is Brooklyn. Delivered to our inbox with the subject line, “Been told that this sounds like Mr. Cheeks went to Guyangola,” Old Money’s “Dolla Van (Acuras, Maximas, Cressidas & Celicas)” is something of an East Flatbush answer to the Lost Boyz “Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz.”
