Dancehall Rediscovery: Whatever happened to… Predator?

Words by —Tami Tsansai

Greensleeves-Predator-LP

We’ve all had moments where a random tune pops into our heads, or we turn the radio on just in time to hear a high school favourite coming at us through the speakers, instantly making the day. That’s the energy whenever I hear a track from one of these deejays… Hawkeye, Predator, Warrior King… where are all those wicked Jamaican dancehall artistes who used to ‘run de place’ now? I for one certainly miss their flava, so I thought it fitting to pay homage to a few of them with a series this week. Check out the first one after the jump.

Protoje has released a new video for his latest 8 Year Affair single “I&I” and we have to commend him for this unique project. The video follows a group of Jamaican youth and musicians including some familiar faces like Kabaka Pyramid, No-Maddz, Jesse Royal, Hempress Sativa, Jah9 and Chronixx, marching through Kingston traffic towards the Prime Minister’s residence at Jamaica House.

You Rate It: Bizerk, Shaggy + Don Corleon “Like to Party”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Bizerk Shaggy

Miami’s Circle House Studios is truly a unique environment. Producers Pharrell, Rico Love, Supa Dups and Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett all count the recording facility, owned by Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle, as their MIA homebase, meaning you’re just as likely to see Justin Bieber and Flo Rida there as reggae veterans from days of yore. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch some truly unexpected combos from different corners of the music world chopping it up in the yard (aka “Circle Village”), over some of Circle House’s famous iced tea. (It’s so good none other than Mary J. Blige has been known to shout it out in interviews). Just to give you the idea of the energy that comes out of the place, one of the most recent success stories to emerge from the studio is French Montana and Nicki Minaj’s dancehall/hip-hop banger “Freaks.”

Started From The Ganja: Pressure Buss Pipe’s “No Bush Weed Over Ere”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Pressure Buss Pipe

It’s been a while since we’ve heard something new from Pressure Buss Pipe. For his latest tune, the St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands-repping reggae singjay best known for 2005’s massive one-drop hit, “Love and Affection,” surprises us with some ruff and tuff ganja lyrics over the spare, hip-hop beat from Drake’s “Started From the Bottom.”
