We Ah Di Best: DJ Khaled x Mavado Medley Video + Khaled’s Reggae Roots

Words by Jesse Serwer—

As you may have heard, Mavado has joined DJ Khaled’s We the Best Music Group and, by extension, the YMCMB empire. After releasing his first track through the new situation in December, “Emergency,” Mavado is featured on a pair of tunes from Khaled’s Kiss the Ring, which drops tomorrow. “Suicidal Thoughts” and “Actionpak,” gathered here in a new medley video with cameos from Birdman and a surprisingly silent Khaled, fall at opposite ends of the spectrum musically. The Boi-1da-produced “Suicidal Thoughts” is a hip-hop track with big, up-front drums while “Action Pak” is some straight up dancehall business. Watch the clip below:

Miami Vibes: Rolling Stone Spotlights Dancehall + Best of the Best

Words by Emily Shapiro, Photo by Alex Markow, via Rolling Stone

The annual Best of the Best concert during Urban Beach Weekend in Miami (or what’s known as Memorial Day Weekend to the rest of the United States) is  perhaps the only major U.S. festival where we see the stars of dancehall share equal billing with their hip-hop counterparts. While rappers like Meek Mill, Fabolous and Fat Joe topped this year’s bill, prime time was also reserved for I-Octane and Mavado, who recently signed to DJ Khaled’s label, We the Best, and LargeUp favorite Mr. Vegas closed the show, Shaggy, Serani, Chris Martin, Demarco, Marcia Griffiths, Admiral Bailey and other Jamaican artists also performed, while LargeUp friends Walshy Fire and Jabba were among the concert’s many hosts.

Video: Mavado and Ace Hood Declare A State of “Emergency”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Mavado, who signed with DJ Khaled’s We the Best imprint in September (right around the same time we shot this LargeUp TV episode with him), has just dropped a video for “Emergency,” a collaboration with Khaled-affiliated Miami rapper Ace Hood and the first track he released after entering the new situation. At first we were reluctant to post a video with World Star Hip Hop branding so prominently embedded in it, but ultimately this one is worth watching, and one of Vado’s most memorable. Shot in Florida, the clip depicts ordinary hood folks inspired by a TV-pirating Mavado to take to the streets, Occupy Wall Street-style, and air their grievances. (“Tell Gingrich I work 2 jobs,” reads one sign, although most just say “Mavado”). Apparently, the revolution really will be televised (or at least on World Star Hip Hop).

Married to the Gully: Mavado x Downtown Fashion Label Married to the M.O.B.

Words by Jesse Serwer

If Jamaican dancehall and the New York fashion world are colliding in some unexpected way, you can bet Matt Goias has something to do with it. Perhaps the only person in the world equally knowledgeable about, and connected in, both of those arenas, Matt has orchestrated a partnership between Mavado and the Alliance and lady-friendly downtown fashion label Married to the M.O.B (maybe you’ve seen their KAWS-designed bikinis) to produce a special event–with a performance from Mavado, and Max Glazer on the 1s and 2s–to celebrate Fashion’s Night Out and Fashion Week, at the new Yotel in Hell’s Kitchen. Yup, Gully Gad, downtown scenesters and fashion industry types are all gonna be partying. (Maybe Betsy Johnson will show up and do the dutty wine?) To commemorate the event, they have produced a super limited-edition sticker for attendees. Good luck getting your hands on one of these…
