Mash Up The Place: Los Rakas + More Take On Major Lazer’s “Bumaye”

It was only a matter of time before Major Lazer’s massive carnival anthem “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)” saw the official remix treatment. The original mix (which features The Flexican & FS Green) is one of my top personal picks of 2013, combining straight dancehall bizness from Busy Signal with salsa-flavored moombahton, all targeted straight for the waist. For the remix pack, what stood out first was “Desorden” from our Panabaynian homies Los Rakas, who of course sound right at home over the dembow-style production, blessing it with their trademark Spanish flow. As with all of Los Rakas’ joints, you don’t have to speak the language to just vibe out and get busy. There’s also killer takes from T.O.K and Shurwayne Winchester on the original riddim, plus five big-room and uptempo flips. (I’ll likely be sticking with the remixes over the OG version.) Login via Twitter to download the full pack here, or just stream “Desorden” below.

Mixtape Mondays: Douster’s “Inna Douster Style N Fashion” (LargeUp Premiere)

Words by Deejay Theory —

It’s good to see French tropical/bass/club music maestro Douster moving fully in the dancehall arena with his newest project—a wicked, four- track EP featuring the fresh voices of JA talents Keida, Cee Gee, Kantana and Kari Jess (not to mention some cool, Limonious-inspired artwork). Our friends at Mixpak passed thru this week to drop off this full-length DJ mix from Douster as a teaser for the release. The mix is stacked with favorites from the early days of dancehall to today, from Gregory Isaacs and Yellowman to Busy Signal and Tifa (and some French ragga, too), so we had to do the premiere for you right here on Mixtape Mondays just to fully hype up the ting.

We’re broadcasting live from Tokyo this week, on my way back to San Francisco via a great week in Singapore. Spent the week DJ’ing and taking in 90 degree days capping off with the Big Wig Festival, where I also had the pleasure of backing Masia One (who just got off a SE Asia run with our boy DJ Autograph). As you know Mixtape Mondays never sleeps, and we’ve got another well-rounded edition with badness inna dancehall, blazing roots & culture, and original tropical vibes. Take it all in below.

Watch Out For This: Major Lazer Revisit ’90s Dancehall Fashions

Words by Raine Martin—

Busy Signal Bumaye Video Shoot

Major Lazer flew down to Kingston to film a 90s-style street dance video, complete with Busy Signal on mic, Walshy Fire on the ones and twos, and Diplo and Jillionaire a pose-off with some bashment girls, for their latest banger ‘‘Watch Out for This (Bumaye).’’ Some highlights from the behind-the-scenes footage they’ve leaked in advance of the Jay Will-directed video’s release next week: Walshy Fire in his oversized Shabba outfit, Busy Signal’s ghetto-gold sequin shirt, and Diplo nervously getting a local haircut: “You ever cut white dude blonde hair before?”
