You remember Winnie Cooper, heroine (and crush of 10-year-old boys everywhere) of late ’80s hit The Wonder Years? Well, as so many…post-fame celebrities before her, Winnie— aka actress and mathematician Danica McKellar— is taking her turn on the unfailingly popular television show Dancing With The Stars, now in its 18th season.
Last night Danica and her partner Val brought a serious dancehall moment to the typically ballroom-centric series, choosing Major Lazer and Busy Signal‘s “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)” as the soundtrack to their salsa routine. Salsa? Well, as we noted when the song dropped, it’s based on a sample of Wilie Colon and Ruben Blades’ “Maria Colonza.” The selection came as something of a surprise to the judges. Mixtape Mondays touches down this week with a heavy roundup of vibes from the UK. A mixed bag of dancehall classics and throwbacks combine with funky house to make for a well-rounded UK rave from start to finish. Get involved below.
Equiknoxx Music’s Frenz List riddim features Busy Signal, T.O.K., Masicka, Christopher Martin, Navino and new artist ReoSoul over a spare, wine-inducing dancehall instrumental from Equiknoxx’s Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair.
Zip FM’s ZJ Johnny Kool premiered the riddim (which gets an official iTunes release March 14) via radio, and now Equiknoxx, one of our favorite dancehall production outfits of the moment, have given us a mix previewing the first four tracks on the riddim (from Busy, T.O.K., Masicka and ReoSoul). For good measure, they’ve also shared a stream of lead single “Frenz” by ReoSoul to help you get familiar.
