Words by LargeUp Crew—

REDFOX-Fiyah-Fox-Cover

The deejay who gave New York’s dancehall scene its style and swagger in the 1990s is back, and more prolific than ever. LargeUp has teamed with Sweden’s Safari Sound to present Fiyah Fox, the first-ever mixtape from Red Fox, and his first full-length release in 17 years. Blended in fine style by Safari’s DJ Shirkhan, Fiyah Fox features over an hour of scorchers including all of Red’s latest tunes, brand-new originals, dubplate versions of his classics, hip-hop freestyles and more.

NEW AUDIO: Download Gyptian’s “Wine Slow” (Kush Arora China White Remix)

Words by Natalie Weiner—

Dutty ConquuerorsIt’s hard to resist a Gyptian track – you know it, we know it, probably even your mom knows it (maybe don’t think about that one too hard). That’s why we’ve linked with Brooklyn label Dutty Artz to give you (yes, for free) a sick “Wine Slow” remix from beatmaker Kush Arora. In these “China White” remixes, Kush takes dancehall tunes like the simmering “Wine Slow” (see also his collaboration with Mega Banton, “Shake Sitten“) and turns them into mellow, heavily electronic nu-disco jams. This one, with its lush synths and fragmented vocals, takes Gyptian from the beach to the rave.

GYPTIAN_CHEVY_MTVIGGY_008 The track is part of a four-track EP called Dutty Conquerors, one of a series of EPs Dutty Artz is releasing to commemorate its six-year anniversary. Each EP has a different geographical theme, since the label has artists and DJs that specialize in music from all over the world (if you live in New York, you’ve probably come across their epic Que Bajo parties at some point).

BRIC House, Brooklyn’s newest performance and cultural space, officially opens its doors this Thursday night (10/3), and, for their very first show, they’ve tapped none other than Jamaica native and NYC resident Burning Spear. If you’ve never caught Spear live before—or even if you have —consider this your opportunity, as the voice of “Marcus Garvey,” “Slavery Days” and other reggae classics will perform before an intimate crowd of just 400. And, we can tell you from first-hand experience, Spear is as vital as ever—trust us, we’ve worked out with him. (More on that later…)

Words by Jesse Serwer—

You might know Red Fox best from old-school classics like “Pose Off” with Screechy Dan, “Bashment Party” with Rayvon, and “Down in Jamaica” with Naturalee, but the Brooklyn deejay has definitely stayed current current. In fact, he’s been quite prolific of late, dropping “Love Mi Jamaica” with longtime collaborator (and former Ruff Entry Crew cohort) Shaggy, and his own solo tune, “Soulja,” which we premiered right here in May. And look out for his new mixtape, Fiyah Fox, presented by Safari Sound and LargeUp, right here shortly.
