Throwback Thursdays: Black Chiney’s Most Classic Mixtapes

Black-Chiney-Walshy-Fire-Supa-Dups

A little over a year ago, Supa Dups, founder of Black Chiney Sound (and producer for Eminem, Bruno Mars and Rihanna, among others), uploaded the full catalog of the Miami DJ crew’s influential mixtape series to his Soundcloud page. Released on CD back when you had to purchase mixtapes by hand instead of downloading them for free, Black Chiney mixes were highly sought-after by dancehall enthusiasts at the time of their release in the early and mid 2000s. Renowned for their seamless blends of reggae vocals and hip-hop beats, they have taken on legendary status.

Madd madd madd stack of soca remixes and blends from one of the toppa top remixers in the game  Black Chiney‘s own Willy Chin. Last week we featured the Uh Gosh! mix on #MixtapeMondays, which has quickly become one of our favorite mixes of the year, and now Willy has taken it one step further—just in time for Miami Carnival—by bouncing down all the sickest remixes from the CD and offering them up to the world as individual tracks.

Soca Hideaway: Black Chiney’s Willy Chin Blends Keisza + Kerwin DuBois

Words by Maj Johnson
Willy-Chin-Black-Chiney

We’ve been hearing soca and pop music blending in all sorts of ways recently, and the occurrences are growing more frequent. In the latest example of soca meeting the mainstream, Willy Chin of Black Chiney has blended Kerwin Dubois’s Carnival 2014 contribution “Spoil Mehself” with Canadian singer Kiesza’s smash summer hit “Hideaway.” The mashup first appeared on the ridiculously good Black Chiney Soca/Carnival mixtape Uh Gosh! and, having turned a few ears, it’s now been upped to the Internet in its entirety.

For the past few years, Red Bull Music Academy has been organizing sound clashes pitting DJ crews from multiple genres against one another, in an annual “celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, dancehall and dance music.” The way we see it, these Culture Clash events are an opportunity for the rest of the music world to catch up to reggae and dancehall in the field of DJ-driven entertainment, and to see what they’ve been missing if they’ve never been to a true sound clash—which are centered on crowd interaction and have a whole different (and livelier) energy than a technical skills-oriented DJ battle.

LargeUp Premiere: SOJA x Collie Buddz, “She Still Loves Me” (Prod. by Supa Dups)

Soja featuring Collie Buddz, She Still Loves Me

SOJA have become one of the biggest names on the US reggae scene over the last decade, touring relentlessly and dominating the iTunes reggae charts. The Cali/Hawaii reggae circuit SOJA are often associated with isn’t something we usually cover here on our Caribbean-focused corner of the Internet. But SOJA (who actually hail from Northern Virginia, not Cali) piqued our attention recently by spending some time at Circle House Studios (aka Circle Village), the Miami studio owned by Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle, where Black Chiney’s Supa Dups helped inject some yard vibes into their mix.

The first track to emerge from those sessions, “She Still Loves Me” pairs SOJA with Collie Buddz over a crisp, Supa Dups-produced riddim, as vocalist Jacob Hemphill breaks some bad news to his old girl’s current beau.
