You Rate It: Busta Rhymes’ “Twerk It”

twerk-it-cover

In his review of Snoop Lion’s reggae reinvention Reincarnated for the New York Times, writer Jon Caramanica noted “Busta Rhymes runs circles around Snoop on the bonus track ‘Remedy’ — his would be a reggae album worth hearing.” We couldn’t agree more. We’ve always rated Busta for his unique way of bringing dancehall flavor to hip-hop. Check our Busta’s Biggest Bashment Tunes Toppa Top 10 list for some classic examples, to see what we mean.

Still, everything about Busta’s patois-inflected new single “Twerk It” produced by Pharrell took us for a loop. For one thing, it’s called “Twerk It.” (Initial reaction: Busta is doing a twerk song? No, Busta, no.) Who’d guess based off that info that the now YMCMB-signed Busta would rap the whole thing in a Jamaican accent, dipping into patois while a rude gyal begins the whole thing talking about Yuh dun no, this time when we come in we come fi flatline everything inna dis bumboclaat til clash done!!!!!!

LargeUp Premiere: French Montana x Nicki Minaj, “Freaks (Mr. Vegas Remix)”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Nicki Minaj Mr. Vegas

Team Mr. Vegas just hit us off with a double dose of remixes featuring the dancehall star on the hip-hop-meets-bashment banger of the moment, the Doug E. Fresh/Lil Vicious-inspired “Freaks” by French Montana featuring Nicki Minaj. There’s two versions here: a Vegas, Montana and Nicki version and a strictly Vegas thing for the danchehall. Vegas, fresh off an appearance at Miami’s Calle Ocho Festival, is the crossover artist of the moment, with “Party Tun Up” beginning to follow the path of “Bruk It Down” onto hip-hop clubs and radio. Let’s see if he can keep the momentum going with this one…

Audio: Kush Arora x Mega Banton “Shake Sitten” (China White Remix)

Words by DJ Theory —

San Francisco-based producer Kush Arora has been at the forefront of the electro-bashment (or, as he likes to call it, “dread bass”) movement in the States for a minute now. With some heavyweight originals, remixes and combinations with artists from JA, the UK and beyond, Kush is definitely doing his part to marry the sounds and feeling of the Caribbean — be it dancehall, bashment, soca, chutney, digital dub — with global electronic music. Let’s not forget the ridiculous tropical/baile funk mixtape Carioca Bass we premiered a couple months back with lovely accomplice Zuzuka Poderosa.
