Brooklyn Labor Day and Caribana get all the hype but there’s a massive Carnival in Washington, DC, too. Machel Montano can be counted on to make a show-stopping appearance at the fete, held annually on the last Saturday in June, as he does most every year, but that’s not the only reason Trinidad’s reigning Soca Monarch be in the US capital this weekend. Friday morning, from 11 to 12:30, Montano will perform at the White House, where he’ll be a guest of the Obamas at a late, yet well-timed, luncheon in honor of National Caribbean American Heritage Month. Details on the event are scant but we imagine wine is on the menu.

Cocoa Tea is keeping some exclusive company these days. The dancehall great, known for ’80s classics “I Lost My Sonia” and “Informer” among others, will perform at the 2012 Olympics in London, where he will gain an audience with none other than Queen Elizabeth II, it was announced last week. The royal selection seems appropriate considering the last time we heard from Cocoa Tea was “Barack Obama,” his 2008 tribute to the then-future president. We also hear, courtesy of the Jamaica Gleaner‘s “Story of the Song” column, that his 1994 hit “Rikers Island” is getting some heavy airplay in France as a result of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal. Just in time for his Olympic-sized news, meanwhile, the regal singjay has dropped a new tune, “Love Like Yours and Mine,” the first single from his upcoming album, Whe De Reggae Deh. Stream it below and let us know what you think.

Always our dude for spotting Latin-culture trends as they wing their way northward via the ultimate trans-shipment point of Miami, Walshy Fire was the first to put us up on the Brazilian craze called Surra de Bunda–a phenomenon which can only be described as the baile funk reverse-dagger assface dance. As soon as we saw the video (must-see TV, watch after the jump!) we knew we had to get the reaction of world-famous safe daggering expert Skerrit Bwoy.
