If you’ve been following me through my column “Blacka’s World,” then you know that I recently choreographed Major Lazer’s latest music video (for “Lose Themselves” featuring RDX) with the help of Mela Murder—and that choreo came out fantastic! I’ll be teaming up yet again with Mela to teach my only dancehall class for the month of January in NYC, Friday, Jan. 10 at DANY Studios in Manhattan.

LargeUp TV: Bunji Garlin “Differentology” Live With The Roots

Words by Michellee Nelson~Bunji Garlin live with The Roots LargeUp

Brooklyn Bowl mash up! The Viking of Soca, Bunji Garlin, joined The Roots (!) and the LargeUp crew for a performance of his hit song “Differentology” at Monday night’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam. For many in the audience, it was their first taste of soca music, and we’re certain it won’t be their last, especially with “Differentology” blazing up the airwaves across the East Coast.

With help from his wife, Trini soca star Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez on backing vocals (and Mr. Vegas, handling MC duties after performing “Heads High,” plus dancer extraordinaire Miss Likklebit) Bunji turnt Brooklyn Bowl all the way up, freestyling over the Roots interpretation of the “Differentology” riddim, and showing us just why he has one of the most popular soca tunes of the year.

You saw her here first! Our girl, Jamaican singer Samantha J took the stage at BET’s 106 & Park to kick off the start of Young Star’s Week with a special, live performance of her popular single. With the entire audience reppin’ the black, green, and gold the multi-talented artist gave the fans something to scream about with a wicked performance of “Tight Skirt,” then took some time to chat up hosts Bow Wow and Keisha Chante (watch a clip from her appearance below) on a few familiar themes.

Now Things: Get to Know the Dominican Republic’s Amara La Negra

Words by Michellee Nelson—

My knowledge of the latest in merengue, bachata, and other forms of popular Dominican music and dance is directly linked to the influence of my Dominican best friend. As a result, any other Jamaican that says they put in more work than I do when a Prince Royce song comes on at a party is a boldfaced liar. When I got put on to my latest obsession in the form of Amara La Negra, it was only right that I return the favor and put y’all on too.
