Blacka’s World: We Chief “Gyals From Brooklyn” Video Premiere

Words by Blacka Di Danca—

We-Chief-Gyals-From-Brooklyn

A few months ago, I made a step out of the standard dancehall scene (clubs, workshops, dance videos) and made my debut in the mainstream entertainment industry as a music video choreographer. I had the opportunity to choreograph Major Lazer’s “Lose Yourself” music video with Mela Murder, which already has over 2 million hits on YouTube. Now, I’m at it again! I’m proud to share with you that I choreographed my second music video, this time all by myself. “Gyals From Brooklyn” is my first solo project as a choreographer and little by little I’m working hard to bring authentic dancehall dancing into mainstream entertainment!

It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to write a “Blacka’s World” column here on LargeUp but I promise I will be updating you on my work more often. Recently I’ve been teaching weekly online dancehall courses for free on my YouTube channel, planning my upcoming fall tour, opening up stage shows like LargeUp’s Chronixx SummerStage event in Central Park, choreographing music videos and creating new dance moves! I may have been quiet, but I’ve definitely been busy! Today I have an opportunity for all dancers in or around NYC! And what’s the point of an opportunity, if you don’t share it?

Miss Calypso: Maya Angelou’s Caribbean Roots

Words by Iscious—

Maya Angelou, the world-renowned author, poet and activist, died today at the age of 86. She was best known for her landmark 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which described in brilliant lyrical fashion her upbringing in the Jim Crow South. Angelou would go on to write six more books about her life, along with dozens of poems and essays. Her vivid prose centered on themes of the African-American family, black women, poverty, and racial discrimination. A perhaps lesser-known chapter in Maya Angelou’s illustrious career is her musical endeavors, which included a brief but notable foray into calypso. Even lesser known are her own Caribbean roots.
