Cosby Reggae: Bill Cosby Dances to Black Uhuru on Fallon

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Cosby The Roots Fallon Black Uhuru

Cosby Show devotees will recall the “Full House” episode from the series’ first season, when Cliff Huxtable walked in on Denise and her new beau “Eddie Lakehart” grooving to Black Uhuru’s “Sponji Reggae.” The scene—specifically Denise and Eddie’s adlibbed lyrics—was memorable enough it earned Lisa Bonet and actor Clayton Prince an honorable mention on our Hollywood’s Top 10 Worst Jamaican Accents countdown from 2011.

LargeUp TV: Limb by Limb with Toppa Top Cat

Toppa Top Cat

Though harmless, the croaking lizard is one of the most despised and feared creatures in all of Jamaica.  It’s ability to sneak into houses and elude capture is the source of endless consternation for Jamaican homeowners, even though the insectivore’s dietary preferences help cut down on household bugs. More than the droppings it leaves, or it’s uncanny ability to stick to walls, it’s the croaking sound that the lizard makes at night—the source of endless bouts of insomnia—that really gets yardies riled up.

One Jamaican with no fear of the croaking lizard is our friend Stew Cat, a/k/a Toppa Top Cat (seen above with his friend, Eek A. Mouse). Watch what happens when one unlucky gecko wanders into Stew’s personal space while he is listening to “Limb by Limb” by Cutty Ranks. Instinct kicks in and Stew has no choice but to cut the lizard down—you guessed it—limb by limb.

Dinner Theater: Sani Showbizz’s “Big Piece of Chicken”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Reggae lends itself to parody perhaps more than any other music, but there’s one man elevating the spoofing of it to new heights: Sani Showbizz. An ’80s-style skat chatter in the Eek-A-Mouse mold, Sani has previously given us the legend-making “I Know” (No. 4 on our Toppa Top 10 Fake Reggae Songs list) and starred in a hilarious sequence of webisodes with “Jamaican Damian Hirst” L.A. Lewis.

Video: Jimmy Fallon’s Barbershop Quartet Covers Inner Circle’s “Sweat”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Last night, Jimmy Fallon decided to make good on a request from an audience member wondering why they’d never heard a hybrid of reggae music and barbershop quartets. Claiming to be a member of a reggae-loving quartet called the Ragtime Gals, Fallon produced a trio of Vaudevillians in red, gold and green blazers, donned one himself, and joined the group in a rendition of “Sweat (A La La La Long)” from our friends Inner Circle. The results were positively hilarious. Watch the clip here:

LA’s Story: LA Lewis + Sani Showbizz Conquer the Conceptual Art World

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Jamaican deejay enigma LA Lewis recently re-emerged with a new website, a new sidekick manager in Prince Zimboo alter ego ’80s-style skat chatter/former Rolling Stones tourmate Sani Showbizz, and a new focus. He’s embracing the role of conceptual artist, becoming “Jamaica’s Damien Hirst,” we learn over a new video series documenting his evolution. “I been doing some research over the past few couple months,” he tells us while chiseling a sink fixture in one such clip, “and everything that LA Lewis have done, or touched, or have been said…is art!”
