Taking a cue from the latest hit by O.T Genasis, the Verboyz and Adverb Media are making the rounds with the latest viral video sensation out of Trinidad & Tobago. Originally created for the purpose of promoting an upcoming event, their “Curry” spoof flips the L.A. rapper’s trap anthem “Cut It” into a tribute to T&T’s favorite seasoning. This isn’t the first comedic homage to Indo-Trinidadian cuisine — you may recall RemBunction’s “Roti & Kuchela” and Patch’s “Rum and Roti” — but it certainly ranks up there as one of the funniest.
What more appropriate way to fly the curry flag high than with this track, which has been in heavy rotation in T&T months, by O.T. Genasis (The rapper also performed this past weekend at the TAO Festival in Port of Spain). The visuals for “Curry” feature the Verboyz and other community members stunting in the parking lot of an apartment complex with paper plates of roti and curry in hand along with other fixings. Making an appearance is, of course, curry powder in the pack and curry’s other half, the iconic Red Solo soft drink or, as we really say, sweedrink. Of course, no curry turn-up is complete without a bottle of Hennessy, and a curry powder shower.
Naturally, this fuels the ongoing debate– what is the quintessential Trini food? I think many would agree, it’s curry, all the way.
