8. Carlene Smith (a/k/a Dancehall Queen Carlene)
Who doesn’t remember Jamaica’s first official Dancehall Queen? With her risqué outfits, colorful wigs and gold tooth, Carlene Smith created quite a stir when she appeared on the scene in 1992. Her girl-next-door looks, toned body and agility made her every Jamaican man’s fantasy, and won her fans around the world, too. She certainly got people talking, spawning the rise of female dance-offs in the dancehall space and helping bring global attention to dancehall fashion. Carlene is best known for creating the Butterfly dance, her turn in Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote” video (That white wig and gold outfit was pure fire!) and starring alongside long-time love Beenie Man in several of his music videos. Plus, when you become the face of a line of condoms, (especially one called Slam!) you just know you’re oozing sex appeal. Little wonder her influence is still felt in dancehall culture and fashion today.
