Bad Gyal Ting Dis: Dancehall Takes Over NYC’s Sybarite Dance Showcase

October 22, 2012

Words by Emily Shapiro—

One of dancehall’s wickedest choreography duos posted some footage from their most recent creation, performed at New York’s Syabrite dance showcase—and di ting mad a road! The piece titled “Real Bad Gyals” features some very familiar ladies from the New York dancehall scene, including a good friend of ours, the very fine Lindsay Hall, and these women definitely lived up to the title.

Sir Ledgen (who happens to be the model for our Large Up x RockersNYC Jamaica tee over at the Okayplayer store) and Israel native Sarit “Sariri” Zorano did a fine job of staying true to the style of dancehall while playing with the movements enough to give us something we haven’t seen before. Dancehall is not a style frequently seen at choreographer showcases like Syabrite so we’re glad to see these two showing the larger dance community what it is really all about.

This is definitely a must-watch video. The choreography is dynamic and the dancers have crazy energy throughout. The final section performed to “Jump” by RDX is sexy as hell, for lack a more clever way to put it, and will have you itching to hit a bashment ASAP. Watch it below and stay tuned for future performances. Large Up yourselves Sarit, Ledgen and all di Bad Gyals!
