Mixtape Mondays: Hootie Who, Sabo, Jimmy Love

July 16, 2012

Words by DJ Theory—

Halfway through the scorching month of July, we’re simultaneously heating up and cooling off here at Mixtape Mondays. Trotting some relatively new ground this week, we have three unique and different tapes covering ground from London, Africa, South America, and even South Asia. Take a sip below.

Hootie Who, Style & Swagger show 6.20.12: London’s Hootie Who hopped on the bi-weekly Style & Swagger radio show recently on NTS to grace the airwaves with something a little different. The show starts out with the Caribbean bashment and soca the crew is known for, with brand new tunes from Mavado, Ward 21 and Konshens, then right around the massive Bassline riddim from Stephen “Di Genius,” the co-founder of London’s Hipsters Don’t Dance party takes things in an African dancehall and pop direction with tracks from Teaser ft. Pype, P Square, Spoek Mathambo, Terry G and more, with a highlight on Ghanian singer Kaakie. If you’re not up on African dancehall, this should get you with the program quick. Stream below, more info here.

DJ Sabo, Frequencies of Offering Radio Mix: DJ Sabo is known worldwide for diverse and vibrant sets, incredible mixes, his always delivering Sol Selectas imprint, and just in general being that dude. He’s also an integral fiber in the development and spread of moombahton, a genre that he’s constantly finding new ways to keep interesting and unique. For this mix, cooked up for Boddhi Satva‘s Belgium-based radio show, Sabo digs into not only his love of moombahton and deep house music, but African and Caribbean music as well. Tunes and influences from South America, Brazil, Puerto Rico and more can be found layered between US artists like Uproot Andy and Chief Boima, Pickster, and of course his main moombahton cohorts Nadastrom. Even if this is new territory for you, try to find yourself NOT vibing to this on a summer night. Stream and download below, tracklist and info here.

Jimmy Love, NSB Bhangra / Reggae Blend: When it comes to bhangra music in the States, few are bringing it to the club and the people like San Francisco’s DJ Jimmy Love. As founder of the explosive Nonstop Bhangra monthlies in SF, Jimmy has bridged the gap between desi music and culture and US club nights, combining live musicians, DJ’s, visuals and even bhangra dance classes into every event. Also a member of the Surya Dub family, Jimmy is no stranger to reggae music either. The last time NSB and Surya Dub combined was massive, and I was fortunate to DJ the most recent combination of these two parties this past saturday in San Francisco with Kush Arora and more. To hype up the ting Jimmy made this bhangra-meets- reggae mix, where Punjabi mingles with dem bow and bhangraton is born. Stream and download below.
