December 5, 2011

Words by DJ Theory

Broadcasting live from Palawan, Philippines this week, we have another generous edition of Mixtape Mondays at hand, with some the biggest forwards from today, tomorrow and some dusted-off gems from yesterday that very few can hold but many can appreciate. From Southeast Asia to Switzerland, Jamaica to NYC, we’ve got another 360-degree dose of MM here on LargeUp. Take a moment to digest these new offerings, and your week ahead will thank you.

WILDLIFE! x Gold Rush Intl, Reggae Gold MMXI (via Mad Decent): Whoa gosh… you’re gonna need to free up some MB’s on your i-whatever and build up a new ting for this lethal new combination from Swiss bad boys WILDLIFE! and OG selector Einstein of Gold Rush International. In between sealing up his forthcoming debut album and sharing rinse-worthy retouches for the public to enjoy, WILDLIFE! found time to link with Einstein on this two-part mixtape bomb for the bashment fan in all of us. There’s 50 tracks on each volume of their annual dancehall roundup covering most of the necessary forwards from 2011, some big drops and blends, a few WILDLIFE! edits, and a blatant fondness for Gaza.  Close your eyes and you may as well be sippin overproof in Ochy, or, just as appropriately, Switzerland…  Maddd. Stream and download below, tracklist and more info here.

Old Money, Vanity Jukebox 13: Pretty Danger (via Vane):  Here’s some other, other ish courtesy of NYC duo Old Money. With roots in Jamaica and Guyana, these two have been firing up that thick global bass smoke. Here, they select some of their current favorites and showcase a few originals on this exclusive mix for uber-hip NYC-based clothing line Vane. Get hype for some UK funky, soca, kuduro, kwaito, and that future global bass your girl can’t help but whine to. With heat from the likes of NguzuNguzu, DJ Mujava, Baobinga & I.D., Nina Simone, Nacey, Kes The Band, and this unexpected yet amazing flip from Dutty Artz compadre Chief Boima, this should keep your living room nice and bubblin this winter. In case you needed some extra certification, this one has also been approved by Vashtie. Stream and download below, tracklist and more info here.

Deadly Dragon Sound, NYC Vibes Vol 1: The Bad Bwoy Years: As veteran NYC soundsystem and crucial record store purveyors Deadly Dragon describe their latest mix, “this one personal.” This world-rated sound is no stranger to LargeUp and Mixtape Monday and has one of the heaviest podcasts going. Each edition is mixed live with no editing from 100% vinyl (almost all original pressings) digging and sharing the depths of their vintage and modern archive of reggae and Jamaican music. OG New Yorkers and West Indian NYC transplants who have had flags flown high for decades in the five boroughs will particularly appreciate this showcase of critical early (’80s and ’90s) dancehall from local labels like Witty, Gyasi, Shelly Power and artists like Lloydie Stiff, Super C, Knight Rider, Sammy Levi, Screechy Dan and more. Lord have his mercy…  Stream below, full tracklist and more info here
